Look Who’s Turning 10!

This month saw the coming of age of two of the internets finest, WordPress and LinkedIn.com

So, who or what is WordPess? WordPress is a free and open source blogging and website design suite of software  based mainly on the scripting language PHP and the database management system MySQL. WordPress started in May 2003 as a way to spruce up text and had only a handful of users. Over the years, WordPress has grown tremendously from the handful of users in its early days to the millions using it today. WordPress is now the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world powering over 60 million websites. WordPress’ software has grown right along with it. Since WordPress is open source, a massive community has assembled to add capabilities and value to the WordPress ecosystem helping it evolve from a blogging platform to a full Content Management System or CMS. Many developers give their time and skill freely to create new and improved functions and designs in the form of plugins, widgets and themes of which there are now thousands.

Ten years is a major milestone for software, so we would like to say congratulations and thank you to the founders Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little as well as all the developers and users who have made WordPress a success over the last decade and we wish you another 10 years of growth.

LinkedIn also turns 10 this month. The social network dedicated to helping business people build trusted communities and assure strong, respectable referrals went live on May, 5th 2003. LinkedIn has certainly come a long way from its humble beginnings in the living room of Reed Hoffman. A site once consisting of a couple hundred of Mr. Hoffman’s friends and colleagues is now one of the largest social networks on the internet with over 200 million users. Linked in also employs over 3600 men and women in offices located around the world. Today, professionals all over the world log into LinkedIn to connect with each other. But, since its inception, LinkedIn has grown to also help professionals manage their identities, get training and insight on how to be better at what they do, and even find their dream jobs.

As with software companies, 10 years is a long time to survive for a start-up, but particularly impressive for an internet company.  Congratulations and Happy Anniversary LinkedIn!
